Name, where you're from, what you do and why you're learning Portuguese: the five sentences you'll use most in your first months.

Five sentences

Olá, chamo-me Daniel.
Hi, my name is Daniel.
Sou dos Estados Unidos, mas vivo em Lisboa.
I'm from the United States, but I live in Lisbon.
Trabalho em marketing.
I work in marketing.
Estou a aprender português porque o meu companheiro é português.
I'm learning Portuguese because my partner is Portuguese.
Ainda falo pouco, mas estou a melhorar!
I don't speak much yet, but I'm getting better!

Three Portugal details

Chamo-me, with the pronoun after the verb: that's the Portugal form. Sou de + country often joins the article: sou do Brasil, da Alemanha, dos Estados Unidos, but sou de Portugal, de Inglaterra.

When meeting someone, people say muito prazer or simply prazer. In social settings, two kisses on the cheek are common (except between men, who usually shake hands or hug); at work, a handshake.

Questions you'll hear

De onde és? / De onde é?
Where are you from? (informal / polite)
Há quanto tempo vives cá?
How long have you lived here?
