Portuguese lessons for international employees: a practical guide for HR

A1–B2By Diogo PortugalNovember 20265 min read

Who should take part, what level to aim for, which format to choose and how to measure progress, without overpromising.

Start with the why

New arrivals need Portuguese for life outside work: renting, the doctor, school, paperwork. Client-facing staff need it to build trust. Teams abroad need it to work with Portuguese partners. Each group needs a different level and format, so decide who takes part first.

Set a realistic level

A1 covers the first weeks; A2 covers everyday life and is the level some residence and nationality procedures ask for; B1 lets someone follow simple meetings; B2 means working in Portuguese. As a rough guide, many adults reach about A2 in a year with two lessons a week plus daily practice.

Choose the format

One-to-one lessons fit busy, varied timetables. Small groups of colleagues at a similar level work well with a fixed weekly time. Short intensive sessions help new arrivals in their first weeks.

Try thisLessons inside working hours, at a fixed time each week, tend to be attended more reliably than evening lessons that compete with deadlines.

Measure what people can do

A level check at the start and every few months, attendance, and can-do goals (“I can call the clinic and book an appointment”) say more than hours spent.
